During the Christmas season, people’s hearts are filled with love and generosity. Giving gifts, spending time with family and friends and making treats to give out are all things that lift up people’s spirits. At Catholic Central a tradition that has been happening for over 65 years that helps bring Christmas cheer to families that might not have the opportunity without help from the generosity of the students: Christmas Families.
Families apply through the Giving Tree Project at the Cathedral of Saint Andrews. They share their information and what they are looking for during this season. The families CC takes are members of the Cathedral, while those who are not members are provided with gifts by the church.
Many can agree that this tradition is a favorite at CC but when digging deeper, it’s so much more than just giving gifts to those in need. Mrs. Lamrouex said, “Christmas is such an important and celebratory time in our faith where we remember the biggest gift that has ever been given to us, the life of Jesus…the true definition of generosity, and a reflection of the gifts that God gives each of us without expecting anything in return. We also are consistently lifting these families up in prayer, including sharing a prayer with them as the gifts are delivered.”

Everyone gives all that they can to these families. Many groups even provide more than what’s required, like food and household items that relieve the financial burden of these families for a couple months. An anonymous student said, “I love Christmas families because we get to help families provide gifts to their little ones and we come together as a school to get the presents they need.” It’s a time of putting all resources together to give the best we can to those in need.
Next time you’re shopping for the ones you love, take some time to remember how lucky you are to have the opportunity to buy gifts for those you love. Christmas is all about love, generosity and cheer, and CC does Christmas in the best way possible! Spread the Christmas spirit everywhere you go and enjoy the blessings you are receiving this season.
