Catholic Central has always been known for our strong student athletes who are making a legacy for the school. However, there is one person who is standing out in the crowd and making a name for themselves: Mitchell Dunlap (‘27). He has been named the eighth fastest runner in the state and the second fastest runner with only 10 seconds away from beating the fastest time in Catholic Central history. 

His training is vigorous and intense. Dunlap said, “training typically is a full week for me. This is the first season I started running seven days a week, by myself on Sunday.” With two full workouts a week plus a good run everyday, he trains himself for consistency rather than just speed. He said, “at the height of my season I was running 60 miles, and to accomplish that, it was important to stay consistent in practice and show up every day.” In order to achieve this he also had to take care of his body with lots of hydration and a good sleep schedule. 

During races he makes sure to give 100 percent effort with every mile. He has high expectations for next year and wants to beat the school record! He said, “I ended up in the medical tent after the state finals last year, so I came back this year with a chip on my shoulder…now being only about 10 seconds off the school record, I’m ready to keep working hard and come back next year.”

He gives us a little inside look into what the hardest part of the races are. He said, “the hardest mile is always the last one. You’re tired, you want to give up, and you need to make your move in the last mile… most of the last mile is run on pure grit, for any level of runner.” This grit they run on is powered by the love of racing and the need to accomplish what was started. 

Mitchell’s effort and dedication to his sport is an absolute inspiration. Catholic Central hopes to have him on their school records next year and will cheer him on the entire season. Next time you’re looking for an event to go to, stop by and watch a meet! Maybe you’ll see Mitchell come in first.
