Football season has started and the cheer team is fired up! With crowd favorite cheers and impressive stunts, these cheerleaders are hyping up everyone in the stadium. But this team has more than a peppy spirit, they have a great history of traditions, service and strength.
Our iconic fight song, performed every game, has been a CC tradition for over 100 years. The head cheer coach, McKenzie Hollern Southerington, said “performing the fight song connects [the team] to Catholic Central cheerleaders of the past, present and future.” Alumni can reminisce over the routine that, aside from minor changes, has stayed the same. Our team wears the same colors and lifts up the school in the way they did in our alumni’s high school years.
The service this team does for the community is outstanding. Senior cheerleader Kendall Outwater said that this team welcomes people at the Glorium auction and cheers on runners in the Brave Bee 5K for breast cancer awareness. They also volunteer their time with the youth cheer program, teaching young girls cheers, jumps, and stunts.

Along with cheering on others, they have a great support system in the team as well. Junior Madeline Tietema said, “everyone has each other’s backs and you can really see how much we’ve grown because of that.”
Cheerleading is a sport in which trust is the most important thing. In stunting, the flyer relies on their bases and backspot to hold them up and catch them. With the trust they have built, Coach Southerington has reported that the stunting is the strongest it’s been in years and the tumbling is clean.
Overall, our CC cheer team is quite impressive and our school has a lot to be proud of with them cheering us on. So at the next game, take a moment to appreciate them and all they do. Be loud and take part in the cheers they do!
