Tate McRae, Canadian singer and songwriter, released a new hit single “Housewife,” on October 15, which is currently at over 2.43 million streams in the United States. Contrary to the title, the song is about women being happy with being single and having financial independence.
To truly appreciate anything in this world, you have to understand the deeper meaning. A housewife is defined as a married woman whose primary occupation is running and managing her family’s home—including cooking, cleaning, caring for children, and handling household duties—without holding a separate paid job outside the house. However, Tate flips that definition around singing, “I just wanna make a lot of money, be my own housewife,” overturning the thought that housewives lack economic power.
On the single’s cover artwork, Tate is featured pushing a stroller filled with cash which symbolizes her career being her “baby,” rather than conforming into traditional family expectations. She also shares her beliefs that a romantic relationship is a luxury rather than a necessity. She sings, “I don’t need you, I don’t want you, and that’s my favorite thing,” emphasizing her complete autonomy.
On October seventh, during the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Tate said her fans had completely missed the Easter eggs she had left. In her Lollapalooza set, the word “Housewife” flashed prominently at the start of the show. The fans also were over-theorizing, guessing that the song name was “sunglasses” all because she wore sunglasses. Tate’s new album doesn’t have a release date yet but is speculated to be released late 2026 or early 2027.
