Catholic Central students travel from far and wide to get to school every morning. From 15 minute commutes to shocking one hour ones, CC students need to find a way to stay busy during their travels.
In a survey, most students reported listening to music, a podcast or playing on their phone while in the car. Talking with friends and family was another common response and the classic looking out the window came up fairly often as well.
We also got a few responses from teachers. Mr. Harvey reported listening to podcasts like “the old man I am,” and Mr. Sherman reported listening to podcasts as well.
Every once in a while, students see something interesting during the commute. While the commute is mostly boring, students have reported seeing car crashes, birds and even a swat raid.
Mr. Sherman, an English teacher, gave a fittingly vivid description of his daily commute: “cows, deer, corn growing (fun to see the plants emerge in the spring), beautifully lit Christmas trees down the middle of Lake Michigan Drive in Allendale, bald eagles, full moons over the Grand River (231 bridge.)”
Grace Heins may have the longest commute out of the CC students. She travels from Lansing every day and sits through a one hour drive each way. Heins is a competitive ballet dancer, and she said that one of the biggest factors for her choosing CC is that she wanted “…a school that was close to my studio so I could continue to focus on that.”
Heins said that even though the closeness of her studio was what originally drew her to Catholic Central, she’s grown to love all of the opportunities to get involved. She said that “one of the best decisions I made was to join the CC cheer team, which was something that had never been made available to me where I attended school before.”
We hope that all students and staff can continue to make the trip to Catholic Central every day and that they stay safe on the road. Currently most students have reported being in zero accidents and hopefully we can keep it that way.
