For a lot of students, Friday night football games are more than just watching the game. The Catholic Central student section brings a ton of energy through its traditions, chants, and different themes for each game. Taylor Wisinski ’27 helps lead the student section and is in charge of helping plan the themes throughout the season.

One of the biggest traditions happens right at the beginning of the game. As the students sway from side to side and the players run and jump onto the fence, the student section gets loud to hype everyone up.

Wisinski said the energy is even bigger during rivalry games. “Everyone is a lot more involved, the game just feels more important and everything seems way more intense,” he said. 

When asked to describe the student section in three words, Wisinski said, “The greatest ever.”

The themes are also a big part of each game. Most of them are planned at the beginning of the school year based on who the team is playing or when the game is. The themes are usually promoted a few weeks ahead of time so students have enough time to get their outfits together.

Another tradition is spelling “COUGARS” with letters on the fence. Wisinski stated the letters are randomly assigned at the beginning of the year. Some students get the letters that match their names, while others just get random letters. The hardest part isn’t necessarily spelling the word, but getting everyone into the right spot on the fence.

One of Wisinski’s most memorable moments was during the 9/11 game, when the student section chanted “U-S-A” while a helicopter flew overhead

Between the themes, chants, and traditions the student sections add a lot of atmospheres to Friday night games. For Wisinski, being involved is a way to help make each game more fun and bring everyone together.
