Rowan Kozminski On Capital Hill

The United States government is a complex system with many branches and people working to keep the country running smoothly. Many look up to the senators and top government officials, and getting to meet them is an opportunity of a lifetime. Rowan Kozminski (‘27) has earned this extraordinary opportunity to meet the senators, cabinet members, military liaisons, and many government officials with the Senator Youth Program.

This program, run by the government, allows two students from each state to go to DC on an all expenses paid eight day trip and a ten grand scholarship for college. With an amazing opportunity, it takes a lot of commitment. Rowan said, “I had to fill out an application with my resume, short answer questions, grades, and 2 [recommendation] letters. If your application is selected, you are entered into an essay contest, where you write an essay on a topic regarding law, politics, foreign policy, or American society; I wrote mine on the Israel-Hamas war. After that, they choose 5-10 finalists and give interviews, before the top two applicants are selected for the program.” He put in an immense amount of dedication and work for his spot and he represents Catholic Central in a great spotlight.

Rowan tells us that he will not find out the exact agenda until he arrives in DC, however, he has many things he is looking forward to. He said, “I’m excited to meet many of the senators, especially our Michigan senators (Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin), but I think there will be other great opportunities to meet diplomats, pentagon officials, and more.” Even though he doesn’t plan to go into politics or an elected office when he is older, he believes that politics is important in everyone’s lives and it should be studied.

Rowan’s incredible efforts and success to earn a spot in this prestigious program is an inspiration to everyone. If you see him in the halls, congratulate him and talk about this experience he has received!
